Courtyards — a microclimate solution for the modern townhouse

On narrow, deep plots, a well-placed courtyard can completely change how a house performs — without adding a single air conditioner.

Before air conditioning, tube houses in Central and Southern Vietnam used courtyards to solve the ventilation problem — a passive solution that costs no electricity and works better than most people realize.

The natural cooling mechanism

A courtyard with greenery and water creates a pocket of air 2-4°C cooler than outside. This air is drawn into adjoining rooms through convection, significantly cutting down the time air conditioning needs to run — especially in the morning and evening.

Light for the middle of the house

In tube houses deeper than 15-20m, the middle section is often dark and stuffy if it relies only on front and rear openings. A skylight combined with a central courtyard solves this completely, without needing side windows — which are usually impossible anyway given shared party walls.

Placement determines effectiveness

Having a courtyard doesn't automatically mean a cooler house. Its position must be calculated against prevailing wind and sun direction — placed wrong, a courtyard just bakes in full sun all day and becomes a heat trap. This is a calculation we always run before putting a courtyard into a design.

  • Minimum area should reach 8-12% of the floor area to achieve a noticeable cooling effect.
  • At least one side of the courtyard should border the common living area to optimize convective airflow.
  • Choose plants with a wide canopy and low leaf-drop to minimize maintenance.

A courtyard isn't a decorative add-on — it's a functional system within the house, and needs to be engineered as carefully as any other technical system.
